Apple Cinnamon French Toast Strata (4/2/2010)

Apple Cinnamon French Toast Strata

1 loaf sliced cinnamon bread
1 8 oz. package cream cheese, cut into small cubes
1 pealed and sliced apple
8 eggs
2 ½ cups half & half
1 ½ tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. vanilla
½ tsp. nutmeg
4 tablespoons butter, melted
¼ cup maple syrup
Powdered sugar for dusting
Cooking spray

Coat a 9 x 13-inch dish with cooking spray. Arrange half of the bread slices in the bottom of the dish. Cover evenly with cream cheese cubes. Top with sliced apples. Press down. Now top with remaining bread slices to fit.

In a large bowl, lightly whisk eggs. Now add the half & half, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, melted butter and maple syrup. Pour evenly over the bread mixture. Cover with plastic wrap, and press down so that all bread slices are covered. Refrigerate overnight.

Preheat oven to 350-degrees F. Remove strata from refrigerator 30 minutes before baking. Remove plastic wrap. Bake for 1 hour. Remove from oven and let stand for 10 minutes before slicing. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve with additional maple syrup at the table. Serves 8-12.
